MEDIA RELEASE
Thursday, May 8, 2008Frankfort, KY, April 30- Although her personal fight with breast cancer is over, State Representative Addia Wuchner (R-Florence) once again returned to Frankfort to join numerous breast cancer survivors from across our Commonwealth to attend the First Lady's 13th Annual Celebration of Hope.
"It was such an amazing experience to join with my fellow Kentuckians and cancer survivors to bring Frankfort alive with hope and to celebrate survivorship. No one knew where the journey to survival would lead us, but through surviving, we gained the power to fight and thrive," said Representative Wuchner.
In conjunction with the Celebration of Hope, Representative Wuchner introduced The Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Fillies For The Cure Dragon Boat Racing Team. The 20-member team, of which Representative Wuchner is a member, is the first of its kind in Kentucky and races a 54-foot long pink traditional dragon boat with the motto to paddle strong and onward in order to share encouragement, provide support for others and raise funds in the "Race for the Cure".
Added Representative Wuchner, “Every appearance of The Kentucky Thorough Breasts Team is an avenue to promote breast health, cancer awareness and recovery, and to encourage women and men living with breast cancer, to lead full and active lives. We carry in our hearts the journey through breast cancer that has affected so many friends, family and sisters. ”
In October of 2006, Representative Wuchner was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. She began her battle against this disease with aggressive chemotherapy treatments in early November 2006 and on April 9, 2007, she underwent bilateral mastectomy surgery. Throughout her fight against breast cancer, Representative Wuchner has continued to display her bravery and unselfishness by openly sharing the details of her private struggle and by promoting her personal motto, "Fighting, Surviving, and Thriving."
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Kentucky 's women. This year it's estimated that over 3,200 new cases of breast cancer will be detected and more than 600 women will die from this disease.
Rep. Wuchner urges every woman to have an annual mammogram. She added, "This simple procedure saved my life and could save yours."
